On 28 January 2016, Silk Road Research Center held a panel discussion,
“Collaborating to improve Research and Development”

Panelists were Mr. Nurlan Shaidullaev, Head of Computer Science Department, IAAU, Mr. Azamat Mourzaliev, and Lecturer at IAAU, Former Director General of Alfa Telecom Company, Mr. Zhyldyzbek Zhakshylykov, Head of Industrial Engineering Department, and Erasmus+ Institutional Coordinator. Taalaigul Usonova, Deputy director of Silk Road Research Center of IAAU, moderated panel discussion. Mr. Nurlan Shaidullaev shared the experience of Computer Science department’s collaboration with market and their achievements pointing out that for 3 years 30% of thesis projects done in collaboration with companies, moreover department has established Alumni Professional Society. Which facilitates in attracting alumni to mentor
or supervise diploma projects and conducting practical classes tightly related with industry as well as helping to develop dialogue between students and alumni. He has also highlighted that the department should be strong and flexible mediator between student and market. Giving these points, he marked the importance of developing strategies for sustainable cooperation.
Mr. Azamat Mourzaliev has presented his vision on Partnering for development: research institution- private & state sector cooperation. According to him establishing partnership with private and public sectors will have benefits like real world education, new stream of income, perception by the society. For that, university should look for developing partnership with all the stakeholders: business, business associations, international development institutions and public sector. Development of high quality industry interaction should be enriched across the entire student lifecycle through guest lectures, consultancy on live projects, internships, placements and alumni. Along with opportunities, he has also indicated collaboration obstacles as cultural differences between academics and business, insufficient funding and others. Mr. Zhyldyzbek Zhakshylykov in the framework of the topic “Cooperation between HEIs and enterprises” raised the issue of the gap between university graduate competencies and employer expectations. He noted that through comprehensive and close cooperation with enterprises we should strive for decreasing the gap even eliminating it. He suggested reconsidering academic assessment to increase employability of graduates. Cooperation with Erasmus + office will help to implement innovative ideas in higher education system, just what is needed is systematic work on projects and drive to realize ideas into practice. In the follow up discussion, three main topics prevailed: first steps of developing mutually beneficial cooperation, responsibilities of enterprises in internship, Erasmus + projects. Addressing the question of mutually beneficial cooperation Mr. Nurlan Shaidullaev and Mr. Azamat Mourzaliev suggested that university should be initiator in this issue and should overcome obstacles. Mr. Zhyldyzbek Zhakshylykov has
responded to all questions in details regarding Erasmus+ projects. Concluding the discussion Ms. Taalaigul Usonova thanked all the panelists and IAAU staff for the useful discussion and suggested to take forward the actions further to improve collaboration.
